Located Southwest from Oruro, Curahuara de Carangas was built over the flat terrain of the Altiplano (High Plateau) while following a typical architectural style from colonial times. Curahuara was also known as "Ruta de la Plata" (The Silver Route), and it was the only way of access to the Pacific Ocean.

This place is ideal for archaeological research, mostly because of the historical importance and the presence of Domain Centers of the Aymara, as well as the "Chullpares" and the clusters of homes located all around the main town. Current data has revealed the number of inhabitants prior to the colonization was quite significant.

The church, which was constructed towards the end of the XVI century, right in the middle of the town, has a portal which is completely covered with murals and caissoned images. This art has a predominant religious-biblical motive. Here we can also find an archaeological deposit that contains several arrows and spears, most of which are in a very primitive condition. It is believed that they were probably used by the first inhabitants of the region.
