Uyuni town is located 241 Km far from Potosi city. The town was very important for being the distribution hub for the trains carrying mineral on their way to the Pacific Ocean ports. Currently Uyuni is also significant due to its proximity to the Magnificent Uyuni Salt Flat, a favourite Bolivian tourist attraction.
Located at an elevation of 3,670 meters above sea level and just 30 minutes away from the Salt Flat, Uyuni town is well known for its gentle and caring people. The city is safe in general but precaution is always welcome, specially after midnight.
Despite its modest site and geographical isolation, Uyuni is worth an hour or so walking around. Particularly the Avenida Ferroviaria has many monuments, mostly railroad related.
Allegedly Bolivia's first locomotive stands in the middle of Avenida Ferroviario, by the corner of Calle Santa Cruz.
