Potosí is the the third highest city in the world. Founded in 1546, this colonial city lies at the foot of Cerro Rico, from where over 45.000 tons of pure silver were mined.
It was once one of the largest cities in the world, home to over 200000 inhabitants and had the largest silver mine in the world. The city is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the main attractions the mines (still functioning), La Casa de la Moneda, the Cathedral and the churches San Benito and San Lorenzo.
