Before You Go

The six essential questions worth answering before exploring the Imperial Villa.

Field Note on Staging & Altitude Acclimatization: Never travel directly from sea level to Potosí. We strongly recommend spending at least 2 nights in the lower valley of Sucre (2,810 m) to adjust naturally before ascending the 3.5-hour paved mountain highway to Potosí (4,090 m). All our private 4x4 transfer vehicles carry auxiliary oxygen.

Practical Information

Frequently Asked Questions About Potosí

During the 16th and 17th centuries, Cerro Rico in Potosí was the world's richest source of silver, fueling the Spanish Empire and making Potosí one of the largest and wealthiest cities in the Americas, larger than London or Paris at the time.
Due to its extreme altitude (4,090 m), temperatures drop rapidly once the sun sets. Nighttime winter temperatures between May and August frequently plummet between -5°C and 2°C (23°F to 35°F). We recommend booking hotels with verified room heaters.
Yes. Because the paved highway between Sucre and Potosí takes just 3.5 hours each way, many travelers book a full-day private tour from Sucre to visit Casa de la Moneda and Cerro Rico, returning to sleep in warmer Sucre at night.
While administratively part of the northern Potosí Department, Torotoro is geographically accessed most easily via overland 4x4 from Cochabamba (approx. 4.5 hours drive). It can be seamlessly integrated into a custom multi-destination private route.
Acclimatize for at least 2 days at intermediate elevations such as Sucre (2,810m) before ascending. Drink 3–4 liters of water daily, avoid alcohol on arrival, drink coca tea (mate de coca), and consider consulting your physician about altitude medication (Acetazolamide).
We work exclusively with certified cooperatives led by former miners. Tours provide direct economic support to mining families through gifts of coca leaves and water purchased at the Miners' Market. Certified safety equipment (helmets, boots, headlamps, and respirators) is mandatory.
