Municipal law strictly requires all historic center buildings to maintain pristine whitewashed colonial facades and terracotta tile roofs, preserving its 16th-century UNESCO World Heritage character.
Parque Cretácico is located roughly 5 kilometers (3 miles) north of downtown Sucre. It can be reached in 20 minutes via taxi or the tourist "Sauromóvil" bus from Plaza 25 de Mayo.
While the town of Tarabuco is open daily, the famous vibrant indigenous market only occurs on Sundays. On weekdays, the central plaza is quiet with very few artisan vendors.
Sucre and Potosí are connected by a smooth, fully paved mountain highway. The drive takes approximately 3 to 3.5 hours by private transfer, ascending from 2,810m to 4,090m.
The dry winter season from May through October offers bright blue skies and pleasant daytime temperatures of 20–23°C, making it the ideal window for walking tours and regional excursions.
At 2,810 meters (9,219 ft), Sucre sits at an intermediate altitude that allows travelers arriving from sea level to comfortably adapt before heading higher to Potosí (4,090m), Uyuni (3,656m), or La Paz (3,640m).
