Scenic Stops & Route Highlights

The drive along Route 5 traverses scenic Andean valleys before ascending the high Altiplano. Because this is a private service, you can request brief photo stops along the way:

  1. Puente Méndez & Pilcomayo River: Cross the historic 19th-century suspension bridge marking the departmental border between Chuquisaca and Potosí.
  2. Yotala Valley Views: Scenic mountain ravines and rural agricultural communities just outside Sucre.
  3. Cerro Rico Panorama: Catch your first dramatic view of Potosí’s iconic silver mountain as you enter the city limits.

On arrival, your driver drops you off directly at your Potosí hotel. There are no fixed stops along the route, but if you'd like to pause for a photograph or stretch your legs, just ask your driver.

⚠️Altitude note: Potosí is one of the highest cities in the world at 4,090 m (13,420 ft). Sucre, where your journey begins, is at 2,750 m — so you gain over 1,300 m of elevation in a single drive.

Most healthy travelers adjust without serious problems, but it is worth preparing:

  • Drink water throughout the drive and on arrival — dehydration worsens altitude symptoms.
  • Rest your first afternoon. Plan a quiet first afternoon on arrival. Don't plan strenuous activity or a long walking tour the same day you arrive.
  • Avoid alcohol on your first evening in Potosí — it intensifies altitude effects.
  • Try coca tea (mate de coca) — widely available in Potosí, it is a traditional and effective remedy for mild altitude discomfort.
  • If symptoms are severe (persistent headache, vomiting, confusion, difficulty breathing), descend to a lower altitude and seek medical attention.
