Location
Address: Desierto de Siloli - Sud Lipez"El Hotel del Desierto" (spanish for Desert Hotel) is only 90 minutes away from the Red Lagoon (Laguna Colorada), amidst a beautiful scenery of high Andean desert landscapes.
Tayka del Desertio is not actually in Uyuni at all - in fact it's a full day's drive out of town. However, it's listed under Uyuni because despite being a full day away, it's still the closest town!
The Tayka desert hotel was built next to a water source, where different local birds were going to drink water. The combination of the water source, also called water eye, and the presence of these birds ended up giving the hotel its name: Tayka del Desierto Hotel Ojo de Perdiz, also known as Ojito de Perdiz.
This desert hotel not only offers a unique view, it is also strategically located to visit one of the most beautiful places in South America: the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Flora and Fauna Reserve, where you will find the wonderful colored lagoons, Sol de Maana geysers and the Stone Tree, and many other attractions. Its perfect location makes it a unique hotel and the first (and only) choice of quality accommodation in the area.
The design of the Hotel Tayka del Desierto (Ojo de Perdiz) blends harmoniously into the stunning landscape in which it has been built - the impressive Siloli desert expanse with its untouched towering mountains in the background.
The main attractions in the area are Laguna Colorada and Laguna Verde, as well as the volcanic fumes of Sol de Manana, thus providing guests with a great number of activities to choose from while staying at the lodge.
This site is easily accessible from Uyuni (220 km) and San Pedro de Atacama, Chile (Atacama Desert, 200 km).
The Tayka desert hotel may be one of the most remote hotels in existence. There is literally nothing anywhere within many miles of this place. You are almost on the Chilean border. It exists solely to support the tours of Bolivia's remote and rugged desert southwest, and the supplies are all shipped in from Uyuni.
The hotel was built by four local families and is very much in tune with its environment, with friendly service and local food.
Room Facilities
The Hotel has single, double, triple, quadruple rooms and a matrimonial suite. All rooms have private bathroom, hot water and heating.
There are specific rooms for the accommodation of support staff (drivers, guides, cooks).
The rooms and common areas are cozy and comfortable.
Hotel Services
Capacity: only 47 guests in basic but comfortable rooms. There are solar panels on the roof that generate electricity and hot water in the evenings.
Don't expect luxury and all the trappings which seem essential to the modern traveller. Enjoy this lovely place with great character and a lot of charm.
The hotel has the following services:
- Restaurant and cafeteria with large terrace overlooking the desert. The restaurant offers breakfast (included), lunch, dinner, box lunch, lunch en route, menu.
- Common areas made of stone with rustic details.

Get Inspired
Stone tree
It is a large volcanic rock carved by erosion in the form of a tree.
Laguna Colorada
It is the most important site in the region for the observation of flamingos and for the red color of its waters. Enjoy the spectacular view.
Smaller lagoons
Known as the Route of the Jewels with unreal landscapes, a succession of lagoons each more colorful than the previous one, ancestral volcanoes and deserts that never end.
Siloli Desert
It has a reputation for being as beautiful as a painting by Dal (Naked Woman in the Desert). The red sand reaches the horizon. The plain is broken in some places by giant stones with strange shapes.
Hotel Policies
About the Community
Unlike the rest of Tayka Hotels, the Community Association of the Hotel del Desierto is located several kilometers from the Hotel, in the town of Zoniquera.
Zoniquera is a population that is located within the municipality of Colcha K, 410 km. South west of Potos. The region is characterized by an arid climate and an altitude ranging from 3,600 to 5,000 m.s. which drastically decreases the agricultural possibilities in the area. The main economic activity is linked to camelids. In recent years some residents of Zoniquera have also dedicated themselves to tourism, becoming operators for small travel agencies that operate in the area.
The Community Association of this Hotel is called ACOTA (Community Association of Zoniquera Tucuypaj Allin). All the inhabitants of Zoniquera with also members of ACOTA, so this association is the largest.
Currently, the Association owns forty percent of the Tayka Desert Hotel. The income it receives for dividends, along with the dollar per tourist, has allowed ACOTA to undertake several projects: together with the IES Foundation (the other member of the Hotel and manager of the Tayka Project) financed the expansion of the Hotel, which went from having 14 rooms to 28. ACOTA has also paid a bonus for seniors and purchased medical supplies to improve dental care in Zoniquera. In addition, for several years that the community has been working to achieve its next dream: the construction of a second hotel, this in the vicinity of Zoniquera, to attract more tourists to the area.
